The Single Set Of Veneers: One For All

by Dr. Vareldzis

If you’ve ever seen a movie about the Three Musketeers, then you have probably heard the phrase, “All for One And One For All.”

It describes the camaraderie of this group of people who are united for a single purpose.

If we flipped the phase — one of all and all for one — it might be a good description of dental veneers.

Where the Musketeers were a group of guards united for a common cause, veneers are a singular service that can fix many problems.

Veneers have helped many patients at our dentist office create the smiles they wanted to have. If you are interested in what veneers can do, keep reading and then schedule a consultation at our office in Medford, OR.

One For All

OK, let’s clear one thing up. Veneers can’t fix every possible problem that you might have, but veneers can fix a number of problems … at the same time.

To give you a better idea of how well veneers work, here is a list of potential problems along with possible ways of fixing them with cosmetic dentistry:

◼︎ Broken Teeth

Optional solution: Dental Crowns

If more than one of your teeth is broken, then individual dental crowns are one way to fix them.

On the other hand, you could get veneers for a uniform fix that will leave all your teeth looking the same color and with complementary shapes.

◼︎ Chipped Or Worn Down Teeth

Optional solution: Dental bonding

Wear and tear can occur over time to your teeth. This may be visible, but it may not require a dental crown to fix. If it’s just one or two teeth then dental bonding may be a single solution.

If the wear and tear are spread across several teeth, then veneers can fix them all at once.

◼︎ Discolored Teeth

Optional solution: Teeth whitening (if stains are the cause of the discoloration)

For people with stained teeth, professional teeth whitening can be an effective way to remove stains that have taken years to develop. There are some exceptions, however. Teeth whitening may have limited effect on deep, dark stains such as those that have developed from decades of tobacco use.

Veneers can be used to make your teeth as white as you would like them to be. It doesn’t matter how deep the stains are. It also doesn’t matter if the discoloration is from something other than stains (such as an injury, an illness, or the side effects of a certain medication), as long as your teeth are healthy enough for veneers.

◼︎ Crooked Teeth

Optional solution: Invisalign®, braces

Braces will move your teeth into straight positions, and Invisalign is an alternative to braces that uses plastic aligners instead of brackets and wires.

Veneers won’t straighten your teeth, but they can give you the appearance of straight teeth.

◼︎ Gaps Between Teeth

Optional solution: Invisalign, braces, dental bonding

Orthodontic treatment can fix this issue. With smaller gaps, dental bonding may be possible as well.

Veneers can resolve this issue by hiding the gap or gaps in your smile, too.

How Veneers Work

How can veneers do all those things including fixing two or more problems at the same time? Veneers are like a shell for your teeth.

Instead of changing the appearance of your teeth, veneers are bonded to the front of your tooth. This is like putting a case on your smartphone, siding on your house, or fake fingernails on your fingers.

With proper care and maintenance, veneers can last for decades and give you the white, bright, and straight smile you have been wishing that you had.

For many patients, we can create veneers in our office using our CEREC milling machine. For more complicated cases, we may have to send an order to a laboratory. Either way, your veneers will look, feel, and function like natural teeth.

The process starts with a 3D scan of your teeth. This will give us a precise understanding of what needs to be done to craft a set of veneers that will fit your teeth and your teeth alone.

Before the veneers are crafted, we will remove a thin layer of enamel from the front of your teeth. This way your veneers will alter the appearance of your teeth without affecting your profile.

You will still look like yourself, only with a new and improved smile.
